A test of listening, not grammar
Most free Spanish level tests are grammar and vocabulary quizzes. This one plays short clips of spoken Spanish, about a minute each, and asks what you understood. The level it gives you is your listening level: how much Spanish you can follow by ear.
Many learners can read far more than they can follow in conversation. Knowing your listening level tells you what to practice with.
The levels, A1 to C2
Your level is placed on the CEFR, the scale that Spanish exams such as the DELE and SIELE use. At each level, a listener can follow the speech below. Each level has a practice clip you can try.
- A1
- Beginning listeningSlow, clear speech about very familiar things: names, numbers, greetings, simple questions.
- A2
- Everyday listeningShort, clear exchanges about everyday matters such as shopping, directions, family and work.
- B1
- Intermediate listeningThe main points of clear speech on familiar topics, like a conversation at work or a short news item.
- B2
- Independent listeningLonger speech and most news, interviews and films in standard Spanish, even when the argument is complex.
- C1
- Advanced listeningExtended speech that isn’t clearly structured, at natural speed, including idiom and changes of tone.
- C2
- Highly proficient listeningAny kind of spoken Spanish, at native speed, with little effort.
Questions
Is it free?
Yes. You don’t need an account to take the check or to see your level.
How long does it take?
It’s a few clips of about a minute each. You see the questions before you listen, and you can play each clip twice.
Is this an official DELE or SIELE result?
No. It’s an estimate of your listening level on the same CEFR scale those exams use, to help you choose practice at the right level. It isn’t a certificate.
What do I need?
Sound: headphones or speakers, somewhere quiet enough to hear clearly.
